The History.
Historic roots. A blooming chapter.
Founded in 1841, Henderson, North Carolina was historically known as part of the revitalized commercial area of its time. Steps on Garnett strives to bring new life back to a building constructed in 1888 in downtown Henderson. Its original timber ceiling, exposed brick and generous windows connect today’s gatherings with the character and charm of the history of Garnett Street.
Surrounding the Steps on Garnett structure, Garnett Street represented the historic spine of Henderson, which grew exponentially during the late 19th and 20th centuries as a primary regional hub for cotton, tobacco processing and railway transit. Situated in the heart of downtown, Steps on Garnett sits adjacent to the iconic old train depot.
The most current renovation focused on preserving the architecture of the time period. The space is characterized by authentic early-to-mid 20th-century commercial design featuring exposed brick walls, original wood structural beams and large storefront-style windows.
Most recently referred to locally as the State Farm building following renovations, the upper and lower levels have transitioned over the decades from traditional retail spaces that housed local businesses to an updated first and second-floor professional space. Please join us in continuing the growth of such a beautiful space.
This is not just a business, but a true reflection of what we believe Henderson has always been and will continue to be. The history of this building shows we are here to create a space that matters led by a shared commitment to community and continued collaboration. This is truly embracing history that is blooming into a new chapter.

Continuation Sheet from the United States Department of the Interior
Entry 60- “ N 207 Commercial Building. This two-story brick structure was originally used as offices. It has received several alterations, beginning in 1948 when the entrances were replaced with storefronts. In 1958 the present storefronts were installed; in the early 1960s the exterior was covered with perforated aluminum siding and the interior was altered; and at some point the date panel was bricked over as well. All that shows of the original building is the blind panel and the molded cornice.”
